Enjoy your pairing outside amongst the vines or nestled near the fireplace in our newly renovated Cleve Hall. Tasting sheets to be provided for guidance. All wines will be available for purchase after the tasting, including a few wine-club exclusives!

Rosewell Day

On March 18th, we celebrate the 297th anniversary of Rosewell Plantation. Located in Gloucester County, VA, Rosewell estate was built in 1725 by Charles Mann Page and Judith Carter Page who was the sister of Charles and Landon Carter. At 2,000sq. ft., Rosewell stood as the largest and costliest mansion in the colony.  Thomas Jefferson was a frequent and welcome visitor at Rosewell, and it is said that Jefferson wrote a draft of the Declaration of Independence in what is now known as the “Blue Room,” a room situated on the northwest corner of the second floor.  In 1916, Rosewell was destroyed by fire, although it remains as beautiful historic ruins today that are open to the visiting public.

March Barrel Tasting Series

Join us for a tour, tasting, and a picnic all Weekends in March!

Come out to the winery to get an exclusive tasting of our wines straight from the barrel! Includes guided tasting of several wines in the cellar led by a wine educator. The package also includes a personal charcuterie box and a keepsake Philip Carter wine glass. $30 per person plus tax.

Reservations required. If a reservation is made within 48hrs of your selected barrel tasting time, a charcuterie box cannot be guaranteed.

Join us for the weekend event of the season and the start of Virginia Oyster Month! We invite you to be part of an annual Virginia tradition at Philip Carter Winery, Chesapeake Bay oysters, award-winning wines, ciders, and mead!

Tasting tickets are $12 per person in advance ($15 at the event) and include a tasting flight of 4 wines, 3 ciders, 2 meads, and a souvenir wine glass to take home. Oysters and other seafood will be available for purchase by Blue Ridge Seafood. Live music, beautiful views, and firepits in the vineyard. We look forward to having you!

Additional Event Details:

All participants in the tasting must be aged 21+. On the day of the event, please be prepared with valid identification at check-in.

This event is rain or shine and predominantly outside. We recommend dressing for the weather.

Guests are welcome and encouraged to bring their own folding chairs or blankets as outdoor tables are limited and are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Ten Vines Day

In 1619, the Virginia House of Burgesses – the first legislative assembly of the New World – passed Acte 12. The Acte required every landowner in Virginia to plant ten vines on their property yearly for the purposes of growing grapes to make wine. This Acte was the first recorded history of the efforts to grow European varietals in the New World. While unsuccessful due to Phylloxera aphid and disease, today we celebrate this Acte as the beginnings of wine production in Virginia. Additionally, it was in response to Acte 12 that Charles Carter planted 1,800 vines at Cleve Plantation. It was from these vines that he produced the first internationally recognized wine in the New World in October of 1762.

Our Ten Vines label was created as a tribute to Acte 12 and the Ten Vines that the landowners were required to plant.
