Release of Virginia’s Heritage

In recognition of the 400th anniversary of winegrowing in the Americas, Virginia’s finest producers were asked to each donate a barrel of their best red Bordeaux-style varietal wine. These were then blended together and bottled to create a limited-edition commemorative wine called Virginia’s Heritage.   A truly Virginia wine, Virginia’s Heritage represents Virginia’s burgeoning wine scene while at the same time paying homage to the quadricentennial establishing Virginia as the cradle of winemaking in the Americas. Only 10,000 bottles of Virginia’s Heritage wine were bottled, each bottle representing one of the 10,000 grapevines brought to Virginia by the Virginia Company 400 years ago.  Philip Carter Winery is proud to have been selected as one of the producers to participate in this project.  The wine will be released on October 1st to coincide with the beginning of Virginia Wine Month.

En Plein Air Weekend: The Art of Winescapes

En plein air is a French expression that means ‘in the open air’, and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif (“painting on the ground”) in French.  Philip Carter has long been a home for Virginia artists, and has proudly displayed fine works for art in Cleve Hall over the years.  On this very special weekend each year, we invite all artists to Philip Carter Winery to share in the vineyard grounds by setting up on easel and painting the experience with the landscape.  Every participating artist receives a complimentary glass of wine and a 25% discount on any wine purchase.

ART EXHIBITION: The weekend of art events will also include an exhibition by the Orlean Artist’s Collective, a group of local artists that gather to share and nurture a passion for art in a cooperative environment, while providing an additional cultural opportunity in our beloved northern Piedmont community.  25% of all sales proceeds from the art exhibit will be donated to the Orlean Fire House Building Fund.

Corotoman Day

Time: 11am-6pm

Corotoman Day

One of the colonial Virginia’s most important houses, Robert “King” Carter’s Corotoman (circa 1725) stretched an impressive 90 by 40 feet along the banks of the Rappahannock River in Lancaster County, Virginia.  Graced by an arcaded piazza, a second-story gallery and multiple pavilions, Corotoman signified Carter’s position as Virginia’s wealthiest, most powerful tobacco planter.  Carter stocked Corotoman’s cellars with the finest wines and claimed the most impressive wine cellar in the New World, but lost some 900 bottles when fire destroyed the mansion in 1729.

We celebrate this important day in American wine culture with our annual 30% discount on bottles of Corotoman to the public (maximum 2 cases per customer).

Carter Charter Club members receive a 40% discount and Ambassador Club members receive 50% cases today and every day!
