May 24-26, 2012 - Philip Carter Winery, Historic Christ Church, the Royal Society of the Arts, and the Virginia Wine Industry will host a series of events in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of American Wine.
May 24th: Of Wine & Words . . . the Carter Wine Legacy. A cultural evening at the Historic Christ Church, Lancaster County, VA, a national historic landmark built by Robert Carter. Set in Historic Christ Church, circa 1735, this exquisite affair will include the words of past Virginians who centuries ago pursued enlightenment in thought and deeds such as their earnest efforts to achieve economic prosperity through the establishment of a viable wine industry in Virginia. By invitation only. May 25th, 6:30-9:30pm - Friday Cheers – Richmond May 25th, 6:30pm to 9:30pm. A Colonial Feast: Commending the Virginia Wine Industry on Occasion of its 250th Anniversary. An elegant evening wine dinner that takes guests on a culinary excursion through five centuries of Virginia wine. This event is a fundraiser for the Virginia Wine Council and its honorary guests will include the Virginia Secretary of Agriculture Todd Haymore, Virginia Senator Jill Vogel and Virginia Delegate Michael Webert. May 26th, 11:00am to 7:00pm. The 250th Anniversary of American Wine. A day of celebration and pageantry at Philip Carter Winery to signify the 12 bottles of Carter wine sent to the Royal Society of the Arts, UK in the spring of 1762.
Live Music, Fencing, Wine Tours throughout the vineyard and Vintage Virginia Tastings that include wines from Philip Carter and other Virginia wineries. A 1762 RSA Medal Ceremony with representatives from the Royal Society of the Arts and a Legislative Proclamation with honored guests presenting the Virginia General Assembly Joint Resolution passed in February recognizing the Carter wine legacy.
Book signing by Richard Leahy, author of Beyond Jefferson’s Vines… Also enjoy wines from other local wineries, enjoy incredible local foods from The Whole Ox, and a performance by character actors Charles Carter and Gov. Francis Fauquier. Open to the public. October 2012 (date TBD). 250 Years of Enlightenment in Wine: Honoring Virginia’s historic connection to RSA. October 2012 marks the 250th anniversary of Carter’s wines being sent to the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). The RSA recognized the wines as excellent in quality and awarded to Carter the RSA Gold Medal representing the first international recognition for wine produced in America.
